53.366 - Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori

Img_8935

Kind of spontaneously, Justin and I decided to try out this place in Torrance. I thought it was a ramen place just because it was a Shin Sen Gumi. But! I'm glad we waited it out and got a table, because nearly everything we ordered was really good! :) And they yell greetings and kanpai at you, making you feel like you really need to get drunk! Such an excitable atmosphere, lol.

52.366 - Savor's

Img_8837b

We got lunch at Savor's, a place that's in walking distance of work and has arepas. I didn't use the picture of the arepa I ordered because, well, quite frankly, I wolfed it down before taking a picture I actually liked.

Later that evening I spent my time frantically running from location to location, shooting photos for our project. It was fun, though! There's something exhilirating about working under a deadline XD

51.366 - Photoshootin

Img_8834b

In a flourish of haste to get photos ready for our project, I prowled the campus for photo opportunities. This is a picture of the art department's office. We didn't end up using it, but it was nice of them to allow us to take a picture of it. :D

50.366 - J&J, Homemade Mabo Tofu and Banh Bot Loc

(download)
Had another impromptu dinner, but I felt like cooking anyway!

We went to SGV to pick up ingredients but also to have lunch. This time, armed with cash, we were ready to go to J&J to try their xiao long bao. It was great, although we kept picking up pieces that had become deflated/extracted of all its delicious soup because the steamers had made holes in them :( That was disappointing. We also got the Shanghai noodles; those were pretty decent.

For dinner, I made mabo tofu and banh bot loc. The mabo tofu turned out great; future lesson for the banh bot loc: make the layers thinner, lol. I made ours really thick, oops X: Oh well. We had ALL that food between three people. My gosh. We also watched "The Hard Times Of RJ Berger," a show I didn't know exist but whose characters reminded me extremely of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. XD

49.366 - Asparagus Soup (sorta)

Img_8804
An impromptu soup party was had tonight, and we brought over asparagus soup a la Jamie Oliver's recipe. It was delicious, though next time I think I would make my own broth, use more asparagus and leek. Oh well, glad everyone enjoyed it! :)

48.366 - The Batch Burger

Img_8797
We tried Batch for lunch today; it had opened up recently nearby. I'm glad for yet another work lunch option that's in walking distance :) The burger was pretty good, although I think the server told us there would be asparagus in it ... there was not. :P

47.366 - Where I Work

Img_8793
Not at H.D. Buttercup, not at Father's Office, but right above it :) I snapped this picture right before I left for CSULA at 5:30. Too bad I couldn't wait to leave a little longer; the colors would've become much more vibrant at 5:45. Nonetheless, I have an ambition to capture better photographs of this area. It's really quite pretty when the sun starts to set.

46.366 - Sketchy

Img_8789
Okay, this is pretty lame; I forgot my camera in the car for the rest of the evening, so I could not really take any pictures of the more exciting aspects of my day :( Oh well!

We did sketches for concepts for our second project. We came up with some interesting ideas, but of course the second round of sketches should prove to be a more fruitful venture.

After work, my coworkers and I met up with an old colleague at a Korean bar. Koreatown -- always full of adventures. Haha. Good times :)

45.366 - I didn't even have to use my AK

(download)
I have to say, today was a good day ;) Warning: This post will make me look like a pig. Eh. I think all my posts already make me look like that.

Breakfast - Bánh giò ... Vietnamese "tamale," with rice dough instead of corn, and with pork, shallots, mushrooms and a quail egg instead of whatever is usually in a tamale--all wrapped in a banana leaf. My favorite snack.

Lunch - JNJ Cheeseburger from JNJ Burger Shack. Reunion with Nick, even though we last saw him on Friday (these guys and their bromances -- it's cute, really).

Dinner - Lamb loin chops, marinated with olive oil, kosher salt, thyme, and rosemary. Seared and then cooked at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. I made the polenta (totally winged it -- read a lot of different recipes and decided to mix in milk, butter, parmesan cheese and some chicken broth with the polenta I picked up from TJ's) and spinach, too. Accompanied by a nice glass of pinot.

Dessert - Cupcakes from Susiecakes -- a yearly tradition. Thanks Justin :)

44.366 - Failed Valentine

Img_8759
Saw this at the corner of the intersection I usually cross for work. A compelling statement about Valentine's Day -- boy tries to win affection of girl by buying her chocolate, she shows her appreciation by throwing it on the floor and stepping on it.

Ouch.
